Be the Change

Be the Change
Angelo Coppola

All right so, this week, I kept running across a quote attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, perhaps you’re familiar with it.  It goes:

You must be the change. You want to see.  In the world.

It’s short, it’s elegant — and when you think about it, it’s amazingly powerful.

I mean it summarizes his strategy for peaceful resistance rather well, doesn’t it?  But there’s so much more to it than that.

Look, we talk about a lot of crazy things on this show.  We live in a world where million-year-old diets are called fads. Where kids get their food from a clown character. Where food is being confused with nutrients and calories.

You know, saying food is made of nutrients and calories is like saying trees are made of wood.

Give me a break.

We’re in a world where we’re trying to fix obesity with taxes.

If that’s not crazy, then I don’t know what is.  But hey, we don’t talk about these things so that we can throw our hands up in the air and just say its hopeless and feel like we’re better than everyone else.

That’s not the point at all.

It’s so that we can get the ball rolling.  It’s so that we can be the rumble before the avalanche.  So that we can be the first step in the journey.

In other words, it’s so that we can be the change we want to see in the world.  If it’s not us who’s it going to be?

Everyone who’s waiting for the government, waiting for the corporations, waiting for the mainstream….I’ve got one question…who do you think got us in this mess in the first place?  That’s not where change is going to start.

In this life, there are so many things outside of our control. Yeah, I know a lot about that lately.  But, so do 100,000 generations of our ancestors, right?  Nothing new.  And you know what, it’s not about what you can’t change.  It’s about what you can change.  And you can always change you.

Here’s the deal: if you can be the change you want to see in the world…well, then you’ve already changed the world.

Whether it’s learning to be more active as part of your lifestlyle, or if it’s supporting the businesses that you believe deserve it the most.  Whether it’s learning to plan your meals or to spend more time with your family or just to believe in yourself…you’re nudging the world in the right direction.

Now, I know a lot of people listening to this show right now have made a lot of awesome changes in themselves and for their families.  You’ve made the world a better place.  And for that I thank you.
